Microsoft's Bing search engine continued to rise in December -- claiming 10.7 percent of the U.S. search market -- according to the latest numbers from the comScore research firm, as reported by Wall Street analysts. That was up from 10.3 percent the month before.
But the gains appear to be coming at the expense of Yahoo, which saw its market share fall to 17.3 percent, from a peak of more than 20 percent last year. That doesn't bode well for Microsoft's pending search partnership with Yahoo. In addition, as noted by Silicon Alley Insider, it's not clear how much of Bing's increase is coming from natural user preference as opposed to toolbar deals made with PC makers.
Still, analysts who track Microsoft seem encouraged by the trend.
"We believe that Microsoft will continue to build on these gains to form a strong presence in the online advertising market, a potentially needle moving success for the company, with the next catalyst the close of the Yahoo! deal," wrote Sarah Friar of Goldman Sachs in a note to clients this morning. "In addition, recent comments from CEO Steve Ballmer suggest that Microsoft is committed to China and the turmoil surrounding Google could benefit Bing as alternatives are sought."
Google rose slightly in December, with 65.7 percent of the U.S market.
