InsideTrip founder Dave Pelter gave the winning pitch at Seattle's First Look Forum.
There aren't many places where you can learn about natural dog food, an anti-snoring device and the world's first electronic fitness fork -- all under one roof. But those ideas and others were on display this afternoon at the Northwest Entrepreneur Network's First Look Forum, a business plan competition that introduced 12 new startup companies to the Seattle angel community.
Here are the 12 companies, with the five finalists and top two winners noted.
--Biomoles: The company -- led by Shumei Sun -- is developing reagent devices used in DNA/RNA analysis. The non-toxic gels eliminate health risks for scientists in the lab.
--Crux Medical Innovations: Developing a new multiple core biopsy device, which the company says can speed up surveillance biopsies by as much as 80 percent. The company, which counts a number of advisers from the University of Washington, said that its device will replace traditional biopsy forceps.
--Darwin's Natural Pet Products: A little bit of an oddball among the rest of the companies, Darwin was founded in 2003, employs 11 people and already is generating about $2 million in annual revenue. The company delivers natural, raw pet food to 1,000 customers in the Seattle area, with plans to expand nationally. Founder Gary Tashjian said they hope to get to $20 million in revenue in the next five years.
--DragGone Aerodynamics: Developing aerodynamic add-ons to semi trucks in order to reduce fuel consumption, with the company saying that it offers $23,000 in fuel savings over five years. The State of California recently passed a measure requiring that long-haul trucks must deploy energy efficient add-ons by 2013. Interim CEO Jay Pickering notes that the product is "not sexy," but he said it is a real market.
--Empowering Engineering Technologies: Using patented technology from The Cleveland Clinic, EE Tech is working on a technology called ExoWalk that's designed to "get people out of wheelchairs and on their feet again," said CEO Brian Glaister. Interestingly, the technology mirrors the anatomy of muscle tendons in horses. (Finalist)
--Goodwin Industries: Developing the LunaMia, a first-of-its-kind device that's designed to eliminate sleep apnea and snoring.
--HealthyLogics: Founder Olivier Contant said the company has developed the first "biofeedback fork," a new type of eating utensil which measures how much a person is eating. The fork allows individuals to regulate eating habits, primarily by indicating whether a person is eating his or her meals too fast.
--InsideTrip: A new online travel startup led by Alaska Airlines and Farecast veteran Dave Pelter. The company rates the quality of flights, assigning a score to each flight based on factors such as legroom, aircraft age, number of stops and more. (Finalist, First Place Winner)
--Nanocel: The winner of last year's University of Washington business plan competition, Nanocel is working on a new plastic-based cooling system which reduces the heat produced by laptops, video game consoles and other electronic devices. (Finalist, Runner-up)
Mikal Lewis of Qworky presents at the First Look Forum
--PredictDent: Created with technology from the University of Washington, PredictDent is developing a device to determine whether individuals are likely to develop severe tooth decay. The tool determines early-stage decay which still can be reversed.
--Qworky: Led by former Microsoft and T-Mobile employees, the company is creating a collaborative online tool for users to share notes, agendas, files, real-time chat and other information at meetings. CEO Mikal Lewis said the goal is to make it so meetings no longer "suck." (Finalist)
--Zendorse: Creating social marketplaces for sharing and selling digital content. Its first product, Koitunes, is a music app integrated with Twitter. More on the company -- led by Tom Damico -- here. (Finalist).
