Microsoft's Xbox 360 registered its fourth consecutive month as the top-selling game console in the U.S., rising 37 percent to 484,00 units sold in September, according to NPD Group data cited by the Redmond company.
Demand for "Halo: Reach" was a big factor, with the latest installment in the blockbuster Xbox 360 franchise selling 3.3 million units for the month.
NPD has changed its pubic reporting methods to omit specific console sales numbers, so we don't know exactly where the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 stood for the month, because those companies haven't released their numbers. However, NPD analyst Anita Frazier had this to say in an emailed statement.
"Hardware unit sales, with the exception of the Xbox 360, are down versus last September, but a couple other platforms, specifically the PS3 and the PSP are up on an average sales per week basis as compared to last month (August 2010). Interestingly, the average retail price of hardware increased notably this month, driven primarily by the Xbox 360 Halo: Reach bundle and the PS3 Move bundle."
Overall sales of video-game hardware, software and accessories were down 8 percent for the month, to $1.22 billion.
The critical holiday shopping season is around the corner. Microsoft will launch its Kinect motion-sensitive controller on Nov. 4, and the company says pre-orders are selling out at retailers across the country.
