At the TechStars Demo Day last week in Seattle, Andy Sack encouraged investors to get out their checkbooks and support the early-stage companies graduating from the three-month long incubation program. Well, at least someone was listening to Sack's plea. Today, angel investor Kristopher Jones announced on his blog that he had made a $100,000 investment in Highlighter.com.
Highlighter is a Wordpress plug-in that allows readers to highlight a sentence or a word and then comment in the editorial flow of that part of the blog post. Here's how it works.
Led by Josh Mullineaux, Nate Whitehill and Matt Blancarte, the Seattle startup is looking to raise $500,000, and has already pulled in $250,000of that.
During his 8-minute pitch last week, Mullineaux said that the company is looking to expand the technology beyond Wordpress to other blogging platforms. It also has plans to bring the technology to mobile platforms such as Android, Kindle and the iPad.
"People love to interact with content, and they want to read it on any device that they want," he said. "And they also want to share it, and that's really where we come in." The service integrates with Twitter and Facebook, allowing readers to share their comments with their friends.
As of last week, the company had already recorded more than 4,500 downloads of the Wordpress plug-in.
At this point, Highlighter is focusing on bloggers who engage in longer-form writing who are looking at news way to engage with their readers.
The company plans to make money by charging those bloggers for premium services, such as analytics. It is also exploring ways to incorporate online advertising.
The company is looking to have 10,000 bloggers using the premium service by the end of the third quarter of next year, Mullineaux said. Those bloggers would pay $36 per year. When it comes to advertising, Mullineaux is hoping to have 100,000 downloads by the end of the third quarter, and based on a $1 CPM model, that would equate to roughly $1 million in annual revenue.
Jones, the former CEO of Internet marketing agency Pepperjam and the author of a best selling book on SEO tactics, is excited about the investment. He's even installed Highlighter on his own blog.
"Highlighter changes the game in how you - the reader - can engage with content - whether that content is a word, a sentence, a paragraph, or an image," he writes. "Highlighter allows you to start conversations or engage in existing conversations with content that you find interesting."
