Ford's Focus Electric car on a recent Seattle visit.
Seattle is known as a "green" city. And now it is getting a car to help match that image. Ford Motor Company announced today that Seattle will be among the first markets to receive the Focus Electric, a vehicle that the automotive giant is touting as the company's "first all-electric, zero CO2-emissions passenger car."
Ford -- led by former Boeing executive Alan Mulally --said it chose the initial markets based on hybrid purchasing trends and cooperation with utilities and local government entities. Ford has been working with local officials to make sure that the infrastructure is in place for the launch of the new vehicle.
"As part of the collaboration with dealers, utilities and local governments, Ford will help develop consumer outreach and education programs on electric vehicles as well as share information on charging needs and requirements to ensure the electrical grid can support customers’ needs," the company said in today's press release.
Earlier this year, Ford announced a partnership with the City of Seattle for electric vehicles. “I am pleased Seattle is working to support the environmental benefits of electric vehicles,” Mayor Mike McGinn said at the time. “We are working with Ford to better understand the needs these vehicles will have so we can provide local owners with excellent service to support electric cars.”
In addition to Seattle, Ford is rolling out the vehicles in Atlanta, Austin and Houston, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Orlando, Phoenix and Tucson, Portland, Raleigh Durham, Richmond and Washington, D.C.
The vehicles -- powered by a 23 kwh lithium-ion battery -- are set to be on the market late next year. Price tags for the cars have not yet been released.
