Looking to further diversify its revenue stream, the Seattle Times plans to launch an online daily deal service, joining the ranks of media organizations experimenting with the group-buying phenomenon made popular by Groupon, LivingSocial and others.
The newspaper announced the service this morning. Dubbed dealDigger, it's based on a white-label service from California-based NimbleCommerce, according to a credit on the dealDigger site. NimbleCommerce competes with companies including Seattle startup Tippr.
The Seattle Times is now taking signups to participate in the service, with deals scheduled to start Feb. 8. Daily offers will be delivered via email, Facebook and Twitter, according to the FAQ page, with a variable minimum number of sales required to activate each deal.
NimbleCommerce CEO Prashant Nedungadi told Digital Journal in November that the company had deals with 25 newspapers and directories in the U.S., Canada and the UK.
