Smith
Some very big names from the Seattle technology community are backing a stealthy new mobile application called Zapd, TechFlash has learned. Among the backers are former Zillow.com CEO Rich Barton; angel investor John Cunningham; former Expedia CEO Erik Blachford; and the team at Second Avenue Partners (Mike Slade, Pete Higgins and Nick Hanauer. Also joining the investment syndicate is Mika Salmi. The former president of digital media for MTV and ex-CEO of Atom Films is serving as executive chairman.
Zapd actually is being operated under the umbrella of Pressplane, a small Seattle startup created by entrepreneur Kelly Smith (Inkd and ImageKind) which raised $1.7 million in 2008. The company has now expanded the round, raising an additional $500,000.
Smith declined to provide specific details about the new mobile app, which he said would be available Apple's App store in the coming weeks.
Both Smith and Salmi were early employees at RealNetworks.
