Amazon is buying TeachStreet, a Seattle startup that helps people find tutors and online classes in subjects ranging from cooking to guitar lessons to preparation for graduate school admissions examinations.
TeachStreet blogged about the move Thursday, saying the company was closing and that employees were joining the AmazonLocal team:
Today we are happy to announce that we’re joining the AmazonLocal team. Sadly, this means that we will be closing TeachStreet.
When we opened our doors on April 21, 2008 we had grand aspirations, to create a place to help lifelong learners find great classes and teachers, empower teachers with robust tools to manage their teaching businesses, and enable schools to more effectively generate leads for their classes. Over the last few years we have succeeded in creating what we think is the world’s largest selection of classes and courses, and one of the richest marketing toolsets for teachers and schools, big and small.
TeachStreet helps students and teachers connect around various activities, from yoga to language lessons. The site features more than 150,000 classes in Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, New York, Philadelphia and Portland. The company is backed by Madrona Venture Group.
TeachStreet’s founder is Dave Schappell.
The TechStreet announcement was reported by GeekWire.
